Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips
Families can make the most out of the Halloween while keeping children safe by following the below safety tips provided by local law enforcement.
Preferred Trick-or-Treating Hours
Trick-or-treating is recommended to take place between 6 – 8 p.m. to allow law enforcement a time frame to focus on child safety and it provides a consistent window for residents to offer treats.
For Homeowners
Make your property safe for trick-or-treaters by:
- Turning on your porch light.
- Moving lit jack-o-lanterns away from high-traffic areas.
- Using flashlights or LED candles instead of real flames.
- Clearing walkways of any hazards.
- Considering alternative treats, such as stickers or trading cards, for those who may not want candy.
Before Trick-or-Treating
Parents are encouraged to check the list of registered sex offenders in their area.
While Trick-or-Treating
- Parents or responsible adults should always accompany young children.
- Use a flashlight to see and be seen.
- Ensure costumes and props (like knives or swords) are made from flexible materials.
- Moving vehicles pose one of the biggest risks to trick-or-treaters. Drivers may have difficulty spotting individuals in dark costumes, especially at dusk.
- Cross streets at established crosswalks or corners, avoiding zig-zagging.
- Remove masks or any items that might obstruct vision before crossing streets.
- Be cautious of open flames in jack-o-lanterns.
- Stay in groups and communicate about their plans.
- Only visit homes with porch lights on.
- Stick to well-lit streets and use sidewalks whenever possible.
- Never consume unwrapped food items or drinks. Although tampering is rare, closely examine all items and dispose of anything suspicious or unwrapped.
Drivers
We urge everyone to drive slowly and remain vigilant throughout the evening.
