Beginning Monday, March 24, and continuing intermittently through March 31, contractors with the City of Bryan’s Water Services will conduct smoke testing of sanitary sewer lines. The testing is weather-dependent and may be postponed if it rains.
Smoke testing identifies broken pipes and other defects by injecting smoke into the sewer lines through manholes. Crews will document defects on properties but will not enter private residences. Residents do not need to be home during the process.
The testing area includes locations within the boundaries of South Texas Avenue, East 31st Street, East 32nd Street, Paul Street, South Main Street, South Washington Avenue, South Haswell Drive, Homestead Street, Winter Street, East Pease Street, Burnett Street, Stadium Street, South Gordon Street, Hardy Street, Carter Creek Parkway, Lee Hollow Drive, Chevy Chase, Brook Hollow Drive, Avondale Avenue, Matous Drive, Roberta Court, Lyndhurst Drive, Woodland, Oakview Street, Southview Avenue, Cavitt Avenue, Echols Street, Vinewood Drive, Elmwood Drive, Sharon Drive, Dogwood Lane, Bennett Street, South Coulter Drive, Bywood Lane, Ross Street, and East Duncan Street.
Residents might see smoke coming from vent pipes on rooftops, manholes, and the ground where broken sewer pipes may exist. The smoke is non-toxic, leaves no residue, and does not create a fire hazard. It will not enter a house unless there is defective plumbing or dry drain traps. To prevent smoke from entering buildings, residents should pour about one gallon of water into seldom-used drains.
Residents with questions should contact the City of Bryan’s Water Services Department at 979-209-5900.
