The City of Bryan’s Planning and Development Services Department is one of only 34 across the state of Texas to be selected as a recipient of the 2021 Richard R. Lillie, FAICP Planning Excellence Recognition Program from the Texas Chapter of the American Planning Association.
This award recognizes Texas planning departments that increase community awareness of the importance of planning, aid in economic development and assist with the overall image of the community. This is the sixth consecutive year and the seventh time since the program’s inception in the early 2000s that the City of Bryan Planning and Development Services Department has received this award.
To be considered for the award, planning departments must commit to supporting the educational development of its professional planning staff and appointed planning officials. It is named for Richard Lillie, who helped plan Austin city growth from 1965 to 1984 and who was once referred to as the “most competent planning director in the southwest.”
Criteria for this recognition include:
- Increasing community awareness of the importance of planning;
- Recognizing planning departments that meet certain professional requirements;
- Recognizing planning efforts that have achieved community support;
- Encouraging the funding of professional training for planning commissioners and staff;
- Aiding economic development and community image.
“The City of Bryan wants to set the standard for performance excellence in local government,” said Assistant Director of Development Services Martin Zimmermann. “Our planning efforts consider all aspects of community development, focus on preserving neighborhood integrity and promote responsible growth.”
Working hand in hand with the Planning and Zoning Commission, the Historic Landmark Commission, the City Council and the community at-large, the City of Bryan Planning Department staff focuses their efforts on providing quality customer service and education through team work and maintaining positive relationships, to guide and promote quality development.
“Bryan is a booming community, and the City Council relies on our high-quality planning staff’s expertise so that we can continue to steer our city towards a prosperous future. We are very proud that their hard work continues to receive statewide recognition,” said Mayor Andrew Nelson.
