The City of Bryan has partnered with legendary college football coach Jackie Sherrill to provide advisory services focused on enhancing community participation in athletic initiatives and expanding programs for Bryan’s youth. Sherrill will serve in an advisory capacity only.
“I’ve always believed in the power of sports to shape lives and communities,” Sherrill said. “Bryan is a special place to my family and me, and I’m excited to begin this new chapter to help inspire and grow the next generation of athletes here. When I first came to Bryan, close friends like Travis Bryan and Bob Bernath were instrumental in my success. Now, I’m looking forward to returning the favor, continuing their legacy, and helping others achieve that same kind of success.”
As part of the partnership, Sherrill will help develop and implement outreach efforts to promote community involvement in Bryan Independent School District athletic programs. He also will work to cultivate partnerships with local organizations and leaders, support the planning of sports-related activities, and assist in securing funding and in-kind contributions to broaden program impact.
“Having Coach Jackie Sherrill support Bryan ISD athletics is an incredible opportunity,” said Bryan ISD Executive Director of Athletics Dereck Rush. “To have a legend like Coach Sherrill backing Bryan ISD athletics is a game-changer that can elevate our athletic programs to the highest level in Texas high school sports. This partnership not only enhances our athletic initiatives but also has the potential to unite and inspire the entire Bryan community, taking local involvement and pride to new heights.”
Sherrill played under Coach Bear Bryant at the University of Alabama from 1962 to 1965, winning two national championships, and went on to become one of the most successful coaches in college football history.
He served as head football coach and athletic director at Texas A&M University from 1982 to 1988, leading the Aggies to three consecutive Southwest Conference championships and two Cotton Bowl victories, defeating Heisman Trophy winners in both games.
His coaching career also includes head coaching roles at Washington State, Pittsburgh and Mississippi State, where he became the winningest coach in program history. He is one of only two Division I-A coaches to lead three different schools to 10-win seasons.
Sherrill has been inducted into multiple halls of fame, including the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2024.
“Coach Sherrill’s track record speaks for itself,” said Bryan City Manager Kean Register. “We’re excited to benefit from his vast experience, passion for youth development, and longstanding ties to our community as we work to enhance opportunities for young athletes in Bryan.”
