The City of Bryan recognizes the tremendous reserve of knowledge, talent and skill within our community and encourages citizens to contribute their valuable time and talents to a variety of jobs on a volunteer basis. Volunteers can provide assistance to staff in completing projects or share their experience with staff in a team effort.

VOLUNTEER BRYAN! will expand and enhance the delivery of quality service by promoting citizen participation in city government. It is our goal to recruit, train, utilize and recognize volunteers who help enhance services provided to the community. The minor housing repair assistance program is designed to alleviate immediate threats to the health and safety of low income home owners by providing grants for minor home repairs
This program provides demolition assistance to help property owners tear down and remove dilapidated houses
The Community Development Department of the City of Bryan depends on federal grant funds which are limited, and utilized on a first come, first serve basis. With assistance from your group, the City may be able to help homeowners who do not qualify for these programs , may need some type of assistance not covered within the program guidelines, or have already received assistance within the year.
Projects
• Voluntary Demolition of structures
• Building porches and ramps to make homes accessible for disabled citizens
• Minor home repairs which may include painting, landscaping, repairing windows, yard cleanup, replacing rotten boards, organizing within the house (i.e. removing furniture/clutter)
Qualifications
• Ability to use tools and lift heavy objects (will depend on the project)
• Must be 16 or older
• Must obtain all labor, tools, and supplies
Duties
The position will perform inspections, drafting and job site coordination duties as assigned for developers, builders, public facility construction, housing down payment and rehabilitation activities for Community Development Services. Responsibilities include assisting with the measurement and inspection of homes for the Rehabilitation/Reconstruction program; preparing site plans, CAD, cost estimates and preliminary scopes of work for rehabilitation projects; conducting job site visits, maintaining records and coordinating change orders and project payments on assigned projects; and performing related duties and research as assigned.
Requirements
Must be a Junior, Senior, or Graduate student in Architecture, Civil Engineering or similar technical field of study. Must be proficient in the use of CAD applications and spreadsheets; able to coordinate construction projects and estimate project costs, use spreadsheet and word processing applications (Microsoft Word/Excel/Outlook); and work cooperatively, and communicate effectively.
Schedule
Flexible work schedule – approximately 20 hours per week Monday-Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The position will last approximately one semester. The internship is unpaid.
Duties
The volunteer intern will assist in federal grant funded program duties, to include review, collection, sorting and/or checking of client data, project information, and environmental review requirements for housing assistance programs. The volunteer intern may also research census data and assist in program outreach (public meetings, surveys, marketing, and other special projects). The intern will also assist managers with grant funded public service agency program support (health and social services). The volunteer intern will also provide customer service, clerical, and administrative support, record keeping, and filing for department managers, office co-workers, program clients, and citizens.
The volunteer intern must:
- Be reliable, punctual, and provide excellent customer service
- Dress appropriately for a professional office and exhibit dependability
- Function independently and as an integral member of a team
- Maintain confidentiality with client and program information
Requirements
Must be a Junior, Senior, or Graduate student in Architecture, Urban Planning, Real Estate Development, Civil Engineering, or other agreed to fields of study. Must be proficient in the use Microsoft Office products, to include: Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher, PowerPoint, Access, etc.; and work cooperatively, and communicate effectively with managers and co-workers.
